Blue Skies & Fall Colors

Let’s be honest: This has not been the best Wisconsin golf season.

We didn’t get started until mid-May, September was spent largely underwater and it has all the looks and feels of a season ending way too early in October.

While an early Winter is depressing to think about, Fall golf in the Midwest is stunningly beautiful and I was able to get out last weekend for a round that started out cold and dim, but ended up with bright blue skies and gorgeous Fall colors.

I had to snap a few pics on my cart ride home:

Comparatively, here was the same view last month toward the height of a weeks-long deluge:

Speaking of underwater, here was the unintentional island green on the par four 6th. Not only was half of the course unplayable, the rotting smell and subsequent weeks–long mosquito infestation was almost unbearable.

2016 Lombardi Classic Follow-Up

As I wrote in a previous post, the Vince Lombardi Golf Classic at North Hills Country Club is a huge ordeal, and we had an unbelievable amount of fun at this year’s event.

My fiance, Kelly, and I had a wedding downtown on Friday night, and I had a golf outing on Sunday morning at New Berlin Hills (Terry Fritz Memorial Golf Outing), so Saturday was our opportunity to experience the action.

Our new house is off the sixth hole at North Hills in Menomonee Falls, which is quite convenient for the event. I was given a media pass to wander and take pictures, tweet to #LombardiClassic and do media-y things, in general.

One of the cool aspects about the Lombardi is that when you go year after year you start to develop little friendships with the participants. Some are more friendly than others, but guys like Micah Hyde, Mason Crosby, Jarred Abbrederis, Lynn Dickey, Greg Matzek, Jerry Kramer, Tim Masthay and Gorman Thomas are really nice, genuine people. It makes cheering for the ones still playing professional sports really easy.

Just a few photos from Saturday at this year’s event:

There are few $10 sports experiences I can think of that rival spectating at the Lombardi. Put the first Saturday of June, 2017 on your calendar early, and make sure to stop by North Hills Country Club for next year’s 47th annual Vince Lombardi Golf Classic.

2016 Vince Lombardi Golf Classic Weekend

“Individual commitment to a group effort – that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.”

“Success demands singleness of purpose.”

– Vince Lombardi

For the past 46 years, the first weekend of June has meant a great deal to the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation. Green Bay Packers, both current and retired, show up to North Hills Country Club in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, in droves for one of the longest running two-day charity golf events in the country, and the proceeds go toward one of the most rewarding causes of our time: Cancer research and treatment.

As sportswriter Bud Lea wrote in 2009 in the Packer Plus, “This is all about helping thousands win battles that no longer serve as automatic defeats, the way they did 40 years ago.”

With the advancement of modern medicine, cancer is no longer a death sentence. It is a challenge to fight, and I am proud to say I have friends who have met that challenge, and won.

“The good Lord gave you a body that can stand most anything. It’s your mind you have to convince.”

“It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up.”

– Vince Lombardi

Packers and other celebrities take part in the Vince Lombardi Golf Classic every year to honor Green Bay’s legendary coach and to play their part in the fight against cancer, and the results have been staggering: The foundation donated $2.2 million to support cancer efforts at Aurora Health Care last year, and over $18 million since its inception in 1970.

You can play your part, too, by showing up Saturday, June 4 at North Hills Country Club to walk the course and follow the action. For just $10 per person, spectators can venture out and watch Green Bay Packers and other celebrities and participants play North Hills’ beautiful championship course. Celebrities this year include:

  • Jarred Abbrederis (Green Bay Packer)
  • Morton Anderson (2016 NFL Hall of Fame finalist)
  • Jim Bakken (1970 All-Decades Team, retired kicker)

The Lombardi Golf Classic is always a fantastic time in a beautiful setting, and the purpose could not be more rewarding.

Lombardi’s name will endure forever as perhaps the greatest (and certainly most quoted) NFL head coach of all time, and through the Lombardi Cancer Foundation, Vince’s legacy will continue to help those inflicted by cancer to fight harder, and to improve their chances of defeating the terrible disease.

“After all the cheers have died down and the stadium is empty, after the headlines have been written, and after you are back in the quiet of your room and the championship ring has been placed on the dresser and after all the pomp and fanfare have faded, the enduring thing that is left is the dedication to doing with our lives the very best we can to make the world a better place in which to live.”

– Vince Lombardi

The Vince Lombardi Golf Classic: June 5-6 at North Hills CC

The name Vince Lombardi is synonymous with a winning tradition, and a steadfast dedication to excellence and integrity. When the greatest head coach in the history of the National Football League was diagnosed with cancer 45 years ago, the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation was founded to create awareness and help raise money for leading edge cancer research and compassionate care at the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinics located throughout Eastern Wisconsin.

In addition to being a fantastic cause, the Lombardi Golf Outing is one heck of a great time! Every year celebrities flock to my home club of North Hills Country Club in Menomonee Falls to show their support and raise funds for the cause, and this year will be no exception. Joining for the 45th annual event on June 5-6 will be:

  • Jared Abbrederis

  • Mark Chmura

The Lombardi Golf Outing is one of the longest running two-day charity golf events in the country, and always draws a great crowd to a beautiful golf course:
