Outside the typical product reviews and amazing golf course overviews that are done on this blog, I wanted to share something truly amazing and rewarding we have put in place at North Hills Country Club. This isn’t meant to be a promotion, but rather a challenge to other clubs to open up their course for a day to honor our heroes. There are so many amazing fundraisers out there for our military, but when we started to talk about what we could do for the community, we wanted to create an experience dedicated to active and retired military. Thus, our North Hills Military Outing, now planning for year 3 in 2025.

The challenge to membership: through generous donations and company sponsorships fund a very high end event to honor our heroes. This event is fully funded by members and during a peak day in the season (we’ve done Wednesday afternoons in August).

This year we had 55 active and retired military members at the club, greeted by the warmth and generosity of a community that values their service.

This wasn’t just another day on the course—it was the 2nd Annual US Military Golf Outing, a tradition born from the heart of North Hills. The event was not about fundraising; it was about giving back to those who have given so much. Partnering with the Wisconsin USO, the club transformed into a haven of relaxation and joy for our local heroes.

The day began with a golf clinic, where our professional staff shared tips with those who might be new to the sport or want some advice ahead of the round. Laughter and shared stories filled the air, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie that set the tone for the day. As the clinic wrapped up, everyone gathered for lunch, a casual affair where the bonds between members and military guests deepened over shared meals and meaningful conversations.

But the highlight of the day was undoubtedly the round of golf. Nineteen foursomes took to the course, each one sponsored by the generous donations of North Hills members and their affiliated companies. Among these, Fiserv and GAMEDAY Men’s Health stood out as Corporate Patriot sponsors, their support instrumental in making the day a success.

“I recently had the privilege of participating in an all-veteran golf outing that was impeccably organized and held at a beautifully maintained course. The greens were lush, the fairways pristine, and the entire event ran smoothly, allowing us to fully enjoy a day of golf without any hitches. However, beyond the excellent facilities and perfect weather, what stood out to me was the unique camaraderie shared among the veterans present.

Veterans make up a small proportion of our population, and it is not every day that we get to connect with others who truly understand our shared experiences. It was especially meaningful to form a foursome with a Vietnam vet, a Gulf War veteran, and two Global War on Terror veterans. Although we served in different decades and theatres, one thing remained constant: the interservice rivalry and good-natured ribbing that only brothers in arms can appreciate. This outing was a testament to the enduring brotherhood that transcends generational gaps, allowing us to bond, celebrate and commemorate our service. It reminded me that I am not alone, and there is something profoundly comforting about feeling “normal” in the company of those who “get it.”

Of course, a few adult beverages made the day even more entertaining. Instead of the traditional “fore,” we found ourselves laughing and yelling “incoming” or “danger close” whenever a shot went awry. The humor and shared experiences made the day not just about golf, but about reconnecting and finding joy in the bonds that have held us together through our military service.”

As the sun dipped low in the sky, casting long shadows over the greens, the participants returned to the clubhouse for dinner. It was more than just a meal; it was a celebration of the day’s success and a tribute to the service members who had graced the event with their presence. Gifts and prizes were handed out, each one a small token of appreciation for the sacrifices made by these heroes.

The event’s success was a testament to the collective spirit of North Hills. The Membership and Community Engagement Committee had worked tirelessly to ensure every detail was perfect, and they succeeded beyond measure. Volunteers from the membership and the dedicated staff at the golf shop and club all played their parts flawlessly, creating an experience that left a lasting impact on everyone involved.

“This was my second time being at the Military Golf Outing at North Hills Country Club, and it is one of my favorite events. The amount of care and respect that goes into it, from the staff and sponsors, is remarkable. To know that the military and veteran community is being honored in this way makes me very proud and I look forward to attending it every year!”

– Ty Lebrick, Army Infantry Veteran

As the night drew to a close, there was a shared sense of accomplishment and pride. The 2nd Annual US Military Golf Outing wasn’t just a day of golf—it was a day of gratitude, community, and above all, honor. And as we look forward to next year, we carry with us the stories and smiles of the service members who made this day unforgettable.
