For the first time ever, the Upper Deck Golf experience visited American Family Field in Milwaukee this past weekend.

With a free Saturday on the calendar I couldn’t help but indulge myself by combining a few of my favorite things:

  • Golf
  • Baseball
  • Content creation

Upper Deck Golf was a unique experience, to say the least!

With a full tee sheet, the stadium was packed with golf enthusiasts eager to take swings in a setting most of us only dream of hitting balls at.

If you know me, you probably know I love the Milwaukee Brewers.

Baseball was my first addiction in life (okay, maybe candy) and if I can help it I don’t miss watching a game.

2024 was an incredible season for my Brew Crew, too, as “we” led the NL Central Division all year only to falter in the ninth inning of game three in the Wild Card round.

The Seifert family was there, of course, for all that excitement [and heartbreak] including almost catching Sal Frelick’s home run ball during back-to-back dingers in the bottom of the seventh during that pivotal series.

I had never been at a game so electric (and then so incredibly somber) in all my years on this planet.

That collapse still hurts, but it won’t keep me from visiting my favorite indoor practice spot, X Golf at American Family Field, whether to hit balls in their simulators or do something totally out of the ordinary like play Upper Deck Golf.

The Upper Deck Golf Experience

Upper Deck Golf operates in 25-30 different athletic facilities across the country each year.

The company hosts large-scale golf events at iconic venues like AmFam, Wrigley and Lincoln Financial Fields, Fenway and Minute Maid Parks, Dodger Stadium and more, allowing participants the unique opportunity to play their favorite sport (golf) in a setting they’d never dreamt of teeing it up in.

This was the first year the company set up in Wisconsin, leading things off at the home of the Brewers (word is they may be coming to Camp Randall in Madison this summer).

While you can get all the details on their website, I’ll go over a few of the most important ones you’re likely pondering if considering an Upper Deck Golf experience of your own.

How long Does it Take to Play Upper Deck Golf?

It should take around 90 minutes to play nine holes of Upper Deck Golf, which includes taking two shots at each teeing location and then walking to the next hole.

Not all holes are in close proximity and there will be some transferring around the stadium – at times up or down concourses and stairwells to reach higher and lower floors and through aisles of seating.

Should I bring My Own Golf Clubs?

If you have wedges you love, bring them.

The “holes” at Upper Deck Golf at AmFam Field were between 55-116 yards each and played from severe elevation, so if you can hit up to 100 yards with your wedges then don’t bring anything less.

If you cannot hit a wedge up to 100 yards, bring another club or two up to an 8-iron.

If you don’t have wedges you love, by the way, check out my Wedge Selection Guide, linked below, and visit the stadium hands-free with free access to great wedges at each teeing location.

Each of the nine tees are set up with Cleveland ZipCore XL irons and RTX 6 wedges for players to use and all shots are taken off mats.

These wedges felt like cutting through butter – I may actually switch up my bag next season after playing them (wedges should be upgraded more often than any other club in your bag, by the way, because of how quickly they wear and lose their spin).

Where Do I Go / How Do I Get Started?

If you’re going to the AmFam Field Upper Deck experience in Milwaukee then follow the signs for Preferred Parking and leave your car by the horde of vehicles near Helfaer Field. Parking is free.

After entering the stadium you’ll find the elevators near the Brewers Team Store and take them to the fourth floor and X Golf. Check-in for the event is outside the X Golf clubhouse.

You will need to buy your tickets in advance. Do not count on dropping in day-of and snagging a tee time – this event sells out regularly.

Upper Deck Ticket / Tee Time Options

There are two types of tee times available:

Standard Tee Times

  • Cost: $89.99/player
  • Minimum 2-player registration
  • Golf balls (2/hole provided)
  • Access [to pay for entry in] to the skills competitions

VIP Tee Times

  • Cost: $149.99/player
  • Extra golf balls for mulligans
  • Free entry into all skills competitions (long drive, closest to pin and putting challenge)
  • Free meal and drink

Upper Deck’s Standard Tee Times

Standard tee times have a minimum sign-up of two players and include the round of golf and balls to use, as well as [paid] access to the event’s golf contests.

Honestly, I am not sure how much the contests will set you back but you should be fine going with this option and then paying for whatever you want a la carte.

Upper Deck’s VIP Tee Times

VIP tee times include a free meal and drink (I enjoyed the ham, egg and cheese croissant with tator tots, by the way), as well as extra balls for mulligans and entry into all of the day’s golf competitions including the driving challenge, putting competition and closest-to-the-pin contest.

Upper Deck Golf Challenges

While my efforts in the long drive competition were feeble, to say the least, with a long drive (players get two swings for each of the contests) of 260 yards, I had one shot inside 30 feet in the closest-to-the-pin challenge and hit a 57-foot putt with an incredible amount of wiggle to within five feet in the putting one. Neither won me anything, but it was a decent showing and I didn’t embarrass myself.

The event was busy, but not obnoxiously so. There was a great vibe at X Golf, which I’ve found to be typical of the space, as men, women and children (12+ can join) were all excited to play and enjoy the day.

Playing Golf at Upper Deck

Following the skills competitions, I met up with X Golf at AmFam Field’s Head Golf Professional and General Manager, Andy Barrett, and we took to “the course.”

Upper Deck’s nine holes were located throughout AmFam Field, providing players a walking tour of the great stadium and taking them all the way up to the nose bleeds and near my all-time favorite celebrity and announcer’s “Uecker Seats.”

I ran into a ton of people I know – other golf enthusiasts enjoying the day as music coursed through the stadium (which made recording the video below tricky, so hopefully the closed captions help!) and they had free reign in what is hallowed ground to many of us.

There were a handful of teeing mats at each location along with yardages (adjusted for slope – if you’re curious what that means check out my Rangefinder Buying Guide) to the hole’s specific pin.

Players hit two shots from each location and marked their best score. The event’s recommended scoring is simple, as seen on the scorecards shown:

  • Hole-in-one / in the cup: 1 point
  • Birdie / inside the circle: 2 points
  • Par / on the green: 3 point (greens are mowed to include two circles)
  • Bogey / miss the green: 4 points

I had a near-miss on the third where from ~ 90 yards my 56-degree wedge landed just short of the pin and hopped over the hole to a couple feet. Andy scared several cups, as well.

It’s fun hitting all wedges, by the way, especially from such extreme heights while trying to determine how closely “slope” really mirrors “hit-like” yardages.

The two of us were pretty well dialed in all day and Andy says I edged him out by a point although I’d have a hard time believing I got him straight up – he’s got a hell of a golf game!

AmFam Field isn’t JUST for Brewers game days!

When your round’s over, grab a drink and hang out at the X Golf bar, visit the Brewers Team Store (I stopped in for early Christmas shopping for the kids) or book an hour on a simulator.

AmFam Field is an awesome place to go for more than just Brewers game days!

In fact, X Golf at American Family Field is open seven days a week, year-round outside of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s:

  • Monday – Thursday: 9 am – 10 pm
  • Friday: 9 am – midnight
  • Saturday: 8 am – midnight
  • Sunday: 8 am – 7 pm

While all the X Golf locations are great, for me you cannot beat the ambience of American Family Field and, unlike on game days, off-season parking is quick, free and easy.

More on Upper Deck Golf and X golf at American Family Field

Following golf, Andy and I sat down for a quick chat about the Upper Deck Golf experience and X Golf, in general.

This is a place I’ve come to love over the past year or so, whether to swing by during Brewer games for their “Beat the Pro” contests or to spend an hour or two working on my game.

The place has a great feel. Incredible views, too, overlooking the field from near Bernie’s Slide.

You can check out the video from my conversation with Andy below. Please check out other WiscoGolfAddict YouTube content, as well, give us a follow and when Upper Deck returns next year make sure you do not miss out on the opportunity to play Milwaukee’s “most unique golf course.”
